Hydro power has fallen largely out of favour to wind and solar because of huge capital costs, the socio environmental cost of flooding large areas, and the increasingly scarce water resources necessary.
But building Run-of-the-river (ROR) Hydro schemes in small streams higher up in the mountains may give hydro power a new life as it requires low capital costs, minimal area of flooding and is very unintrusive.
ROR also comes with the advantage of generating power 24/7-- which is probably the principal achilles heal of wind and solar power.
